How it works

Matrixyl is the trade name for palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 (Pal-KTTKS), a fragment of the type I procollagen propeptide joined to a palmitic acid chain. The fatty-acid tail improves skin penetration and stability. KTTKS belongs to a group of signaling fragments called matrikines: when collagen breaks down, such fragments are thought to act as feedback signals telling fibroblasts to rebuild the extracellular matrix. In cultured human fibroblasts, KTTKS and its palmitoylated form increased production of type I and type III collagen, fibronectin and glycosaminoglycans. In small vehicle-controlled cosmetic studies lasting roughly 8-12 weeks, topical palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 was associated with modest improvements in fine lines, wrinkle depth and skin texture, with good tolerability. The overall evidence is moderate for a cosmetic ingredient but limited by small sample sizes and frequent manufacturer involvement. Effects are gradual and modest compared with prescription retinoids or procedures. Matrixyl is a topical ingredient; it is not designed or studied for injection.

Reconstitution steps

  • Typically pre-formulated in topical serums
  • Apply to clean, slightly damp skin
  • Use on entire face, neck, and décolletage
  • Allow to absorb before moisturizer

Storage

Store in opaque, airless containers. Keep in cool, dark place. Protect from oxidation.

Important notes

  • Stimulates collagen types I, III, and IV production
  • Fragment of procollagen I molecule
  • Activates TGF-β pathway for tissue repair
  • Very well tolerated with minimal irritation
  • Visible results typically after 6-8 weeks
  • Continued improvement over 3-6 months

Supplies

  • Topical serum formulation
  • Clean applicator
